Avoid Open-Toed Shoes

When preparing for your flight, it might be tempting to don your favorite sandals if you’re heading to a warm destination. However, travel experts advise against open-toed shoes due to cleanliness concerns.

Bobby Laurie, a former flight attendant, highlights that the carpets and spaces under the seats may not have been thoroughly cleaned in a while. Additionally, wearing shoes in the restroom is crucial; it’s not just water on the floor.

Steer Clear of Offensive Clothing

Airlines have the right to deny boarding based on your attire. Avoid clothing with profanity or lewd images, as these can be deemed offensive. You may even be asked to change, risking the chance of being removed from the flight entirely.

Say No to Pajamas and Swimming Attire

Although comfort is important, wearing pajamas in public isn’t advisable. Former flight attendant Susan Fogwell suggests opting for loose-fitting pants instead. The notable exception is if you’re provided pajamas in business class, but always change before landing.

Swimming attire, such as bikinis or swim trunks, are also frowned upon. Airlines like Hawaiian Airlines explicitly ban these types of clothing, as they are inappropriate for the environment of an aircraft.

Layer Wisely

Temperature regulation can be tricky on planes. Hence, it’s best to wear multiple layers rather than a single top or a bulky sweater. This way, you can adjust your clothing as the temperature fluctuates.

Keep Metal Jewelry Minimal

Bulky metal accessories may create extra hassle during security checks, where you will be asked to remove them. It’s wise to leave these items in your carry-on for a smoother experience.

Be Mindful of Fragrances

In a compact space like an airplane cabin, strong fragrances can be overwhelming for fellow passengers. Opt for subtle scents that won’t disturb others during your journey.

Before your next trip, consider these recommendations for what not to wear on a plane to ensure a comfortable and pleasant flying experience.
