Introduction to Europe’s Thermal Towns

Traveling through Europe offers a unique charm, particularly when exploring its historic spa towns by train. The European Route of Historic Thermal Towns, certified by the Council of Europe, stands as an inviting pathway that showcases some of the continent’s most alluring wellness destinations. This route enables visitors to embrace relaxation and cultural heritage in a serene journey.

Starting Point: Spa, Belgium

Our adventure commences in the quaint town of Spa, Belgium, a UNESCO-designated World Heritage site. Renowned for its thermal springs, Spa has enchanted visitors for nearly 2,000 years. The town’s picturesque streets feature delightful bakeries, charming cafes, and the vibrant symbol of the town, the clown Pierrot, greeting passersby. The local culinary scene flourishes with delightful meringue cookies and artisanal cheeses, offering an authentic taste of the region.

A Journey to Bad Ems, Germany

After a rejuvenating experience at the Thermes de Spa, including indulging in thermal pools and sauna sessions, we continued to Bad Ems, Germany. Known as the ‘imperial spa’, this destination attracted European royalty and celebrities in the 17th and 18th centuries. The scenic walk along the river unveils historic architecture that echoes the town’s opulent past. With striking buildings from the vibrant 19th century and a bustling casino, Bad Ems embodies the essence of luxurious relaxation.

Whether it’s savoring the local cuisine, exploring grand structures, or simply soaking in mineral-rich thermal springs, traveling along Europe’s historic thermal towns offers an unforgettable experience. This train adventure serves as a perfect blend of culture, history, and well-being, encouraging visitors to relax and rejuvenate in some of Europe’s most charming locations.
