Unveiling Puglia’s Charm
My first trip to Puglia, the heel of Italy’s boot, took place in early November, delivering unexpected surprises and delights. I hastily packed, completely forgetting essentials like a bathing suit and bike shoes. However, I was welcomed by pleasant late-summer temperatures, as the region’s southern latitude kept the sun shining brightly. It became clear that the beaches, lined with umbrellas and lively visitors, were another enticing feature of this destination.
A Culture-Rich Experience
Choosing Puglia was driven by my desire for the unparalleled food, wine, and culture reminiscent of Tuscany, but with fewer crowds and more affordable prices. To my delight, Puglia not only delivered on gastronomy but also introduced me to a wealth of outdoor activities. With two national parks, 16 state reserves, and numerous cycling routes, the area exudes adventure opportunities for active travelers.
What to Expect and Where to Stay
Among the highlights of my visit were the breathtaking natural attractions, including the tranquil whitewashed city of Ostuni, which lent itself to leisurely strolls without long waiting lines at famous eateries. The local culinary scene highlighted Puglia’s greatest treasure – the burrata cheese, an exquisite treat that raises the bar on all other cheeses.
For travelers seeking adventure, Puglia Cycling offers carbon-fiber road bikes and guided tours through the scenic landscapes. If you prefer unique accommodations, consider Masseria Montenapoleone, an eco-hotel nestled in the outskirts of Torre Canne Beach, or stay in the emblematic trulli at Leonardo Trulli. Both offer comfort and a connection to the captivating local history.
