Overview of the Busy Holiday Weekend

This upcoming Labor Day holiday weekend, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) expects to see more than 17 million travelers passing through airports across the United States. Forecasted to be the busiest Labor Day weekend on record, airport traffic is predicted to increase by 8.5 percent compared to the same period last year.

Peak Travel Days and Airlines’ Response

The busiest day of the holiday weekend, extending from August 29 to September 4, is anticipated to be Friday, August 30. On this day alone, the TSA expects to screen approximately 2.86 million travelers. Major airlines are also preparing for the surge in traffic, with United Airlines alone expecting over 2.9 million passengers between August 29 and September 3, an increase of over three percent from last year. United has also added 1,500 flights to accommodate the rising demand.

TSA’s Efforts and Recommendations

David Pekoske, TSA Administrator, noted the agency’s preparedness alongside its airline and airport partners, aiming to close the busiest summer travel period on record. Pekoske commended the vigilant workforce, including Transportation Security Officers at airport security checkpoints, for their efforts to keep the transportation system secure. The TSA has also introduced new checkpoint technology to improve security effectiveness, efficiency, and passenger experience.

Traveler Tips for a Smooth Airport Experience

To ensure a smooth airport experience during this busy time, the TSA recommends that travelers arrive at the airport early—two hours before a domestic flight and three hours before an international flight. Knowing the rules for carry-on luggage, such as the restriction on liquids over 3.4 ounces, is also essential. Travelers can expedite their security process by enrolling in TSA PreCheck, which allows passengers to keep their shoes, belts, and light jackets on, and their laptops and liquids in their carry-on bags.
