Yosemite National Park and Yellowstone National Park may draw more crowds, but California’s Redwood National Park is a hidden gem among giants.

The northern California park, which features some of the world’s tallest trees and gorgeous wildflowers, was named the No. 1 national park hidden gem by Google. The designation was determined by looking at all national parks with ratings of 4.5 or higher and fewer than 1,000 reviews on Google Maps, the search company shared with Travel + Leisure.

Beyond California, other hidden gems include Michigan’s Isle Royale National Park, which is best explored by boat, and Alaska’s Katmai National Park and Preserve, which is best known for its annual Fat Bear Week competition.

In fact, Alaska was home to five of the top nine hidden gems in the national park system, according to Google’s ranking: Katmai National Park and Preserve, Lake Clark National Park and Preserve, Wrangell-St. Elias National Park & Preserve, Gates of the Arctic National Park & Preserve, and Kobuk Valley National Park.

While not exactly under the radar, Yosemite National Park was named the most popular national park in the United States, according to Google. That was followed by Yellowstone National Park, Zion National Park, Grand Canyon National Park, and Sequoia National Park.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which sits between North Carolina and Tennessee and was the most visited national park in 2023, came in at No. 12 on the list of the most popular parks.

When it came to the top-rated national park (parks with a rating of 4.8 or higher and more than 1,000 reviews on Google Maps), Utah’s Bryce Canyon National Park took the top spot.
