Known as the ‘Grand Canyon of Maine,’ Gulf Hagas is a hiker’s paradise boasting stunning scenery and thrilling waterfall treks. This hidden gem, located in the remote woods of Maine, is known only to locals and well-informed travelers. The magnificent slate walls of the gorge rise more than 100 feet, capturing the Pleasant River as it cascades down into four waterfalls and a series of rapids and pools below.

Getting There

Gulf Hagas is situated in the Appalachian Mountains, east of Moosehead Lake, within the region known as the 100-Mile Wilderness. For travelers flying into Maine, the nearest airport is in Bangor, roughly a two-hour drive away. Due to its isolated location, having a vehicle is essential. When renting a vehicle, be prepared to traverse some dirt roads along the way.

Trail Conditions

The Gulf Hagas trail system offers a few different routes to suit varying levels of hiking expertise. The Rim Trail, which is moderately challenging, spans about eight miles round-trip. For a shorter option, you can stop at Screw Auger Falls after 3.5 miles and return. Regardless of the route, expect some steep and rocky sections with loose gravel. Bringing a pair of sandals is advisable for fording the river, especially the West Branch of the Pleasant River, which can be knee-high after rain or during spring.

Permits and Fees

Access to Gulf Hagas requires a pass from Katahdin Iron Works at the Jo-Mary checkpoint. The cost is $16 for non-Maine residents and $11 for locals, payable by cash or check. Make sure to obtain this permit to ensure your entry.

Best Time to Visit

The optimal time for visiting Gulf Hagas is between late spring and early fall, when the trails are most accessible. Summer is ideal for enjoying the swimming holes, while early autumn offers the most vibrant foliage. Regardless of the season, Maine’s weather can be unpredictable, so packing layers is recommended.
