Record-Breaking Travel Predictions
As the end-of-year holidays approach, the travel scene is set to witness unprecedented numbers. According to AAA, more than 119 million travelers are anticipated to embark on journeys of 50 miles or more from December 21st to January 1st. This surge represents an increase of 3 million people compared to last year and surpasses the previous record established in 2019.
Driving Dominates Holiday Travel
Notably, nearly 90 percent of these travelers are expected to drive, leading to inevitable traffic congestion throughout the nation. Travelers are advised to plan their journeys strategically to avoid peak delays. AAA suggests leaving for trips on major holidays like Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve, and New Year’s Day to circumvent heavy traffic. The weekends leading up to these holidays are expected to be the most congested.
Flying High Despite Rising Costs
For those opting to fly, a record-setting 7.85 million passengers are predicted to take to the skies during this holiday period, even with a 4 percent increase in ticket prices compared to last year. Airlines, such as United Airlines, are preparing for their busiest holiday travel seasons ever. They report expected increases in passenger volume, with the busiest flying days falling on December 20th, 27th, and 28th.
Interestingly, the rise in travel is not limited to cars and planes. AAA notes that travel by bus, train, and cruise will also see nearly a 10 percent increase this holiday season. With gas prices remaining low, hovering just over $3 per gallon nationally, travelers are encouraged to enjoy their holiday seasons, whether on the road or in the air.
