Seattle Named Most Outdoorsy City in the U.S.: A Haven for Nature Enthusiasts

Introduction

According to the 2023 Outdoor Participation Trends Report, the outdoor recreation participant base in the U.S. grew by another 2.3 percent in 2022, reaching a record 168.1 million participants. With approximately 55 percent of the U.S. population aged six and older engaging in activities such as hiking, biking, and skiing, certain cities are well-poised to cater to this growing passion for the outdoors.

Seattle Takes the Top Spot

A recent study sponsored by RVshare, a leading provider of RV rentals, has named Seattle as the most outdoor-friendly large city in the U.S. The study evaluated cities with populations of over one million, considering factors such as the average number of days residents partake in outdoor activities, visits to public parks, and the volume of tourists seeking outdoor adventures.

Seattle stood out across various metrics, particularly excelling in the number of visits to public parks and the usage of outdoor-focused apps and planning tools. Its geographical advantages—being surrounded by water, mountains, and forests—afford residents and visitors a wide range of recreational opportunities including hiking, kayaking, and skiing.

Other Top Outdoor-Friendly Cities

Following Seattle, Denver was recognized for its outstanding outdoor amenities, notably as the “gateway to the Rocky Mountains.” It ranked first in accessibility to state and municipal outdoor recreation, with nearby attractions like Rocky Mountain National Park drawing numerous nature enthusiasts.

Grand Rapids, Michigan, secured the third spot, praised for its extensive park system, proximity to Lake Michigan, and its location along the Grand River, which is popular for kayaking and fishing.

Conclusion

These findings underscore the importance of accessible outdoor recreation in urban settings, highlighting cities that are excelling in meeting the growing demand for nature-based activities. Whether it’s the lush parks of Seattle, the mountainous terrain around Denver, or the waterways of Grand Rapids, these cities offer abundant opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts to explore and enjoy.
