Holiday Travel Challenges: Airports With the Most Weather Delays

Understanding Weather-Related Disruptions

Winter weather poses significant threats to holiday travel plans, often leading to considerable delays at various airports. According to a recent study conducted by Upgraded Points, certain airports are more prone to these disruptions than others. Understanding these trends can help travelers prepare better for potential setbacks during the holiday season.

Top Airports for Weather Delays

The study reveals that San Francisco International Airport (SFO) leads the pack with a startling 42.3% of flights delayed due to weather between November and January. Following closely behind is Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) at 42.1%, while New York’s LaGuardia Airport (LGA) sees 38.3% of flights impacted. Other airports notably affected include Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) at 38.1% and Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) at 31.3%.

More Favorable Airports

On the other hand, airports in milder climates exhibit fewer weather-related interruptions. Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) in Hawaii stands out with only 11% of flights experiencing weather delays. Other airports with lower delay rates include Houston’s William P. Hobby Airport (HOU) at 12.3% and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) at 12.4%. This variance highlights the impact of climate on holiday travel reliability.

With holiday travel approaching, it is crucial for travelers to stay informed about potential delays and disruptions. Preparedness can make a significant difference in navigating the hectic holiday travel landscape.
