American Airlines will fly as many as 40 daily routes to Cancun and the Riviera Maya this winter

The carrier will offer nonstop service from 18 U.S. airports across its network, claiming it has “more flights to Cancun than any other U.S. carrier,” American said in a statement.

On Saturday, Dec. 9, American began new Cancun flights from Cincinnati, Nashville, and Pittsburgh, continuing to fly these seasonal routes once weekly through the end of March.

American will operate Cancun flights to many mid-sized cities nationwide, including Austin, Boston, Columbus, Indianapolis, Kansas City, Raleigh-Durham, and St. Louis. Many of these routes will also operate with Saturday-only service, allowing travelers to spend an entire week of vacation before heading home.

From nearly all its hubs, American offers Cancun flights from Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, Miami, Los Angeles, New York-JFK, Philadelphia, and Phoenix. With as many as 9x flights per day, American is poised for a record schedule to Cancun this winter, the airline confirmed to T+L. Combined with existing flights to Cozumel and Merida, the carrier will also offer dozens of seamless connections to destinations across the Yucatan Peninsula.

The announcement comes weeks after the carrier debuted a sizeable route expansion to Latin America and the Caribbean throughout the new year. Starting March 28, American will begin flying four daily nonstop routes to Tulum’s new airport when it opens for international air service. Later in June, the airline will increase frequencies on existing routes to destinations like the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, and Turks and Caicos.

American isn’t the only U.S. carrier to add new flights to warm-weather destinations — major legacy competitors United and Delta will also increase frequencies on their flights to Mexico this winter as the demand for leisure travel continues strong.
