Allegiant Airlines Announces Major Changes at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport
Starting January 7, 2025, Allegiant Airlines will be closing its crew and aircraft base at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) and reducing its routes by nearly a dozen. This decision is part of the airline’s strategic shift to operate out of the airport’s main terminal. The move coincides with ongoing major renovations at the central Texas airport, which began in 2017.
Routes and Terminal Changes
Currently, Allegiant Airlines operates from the smaller South Terminal, which is scheduled to close as part of the larger construction plans. A spokesperson from the airport authority stated, “Allegiant will close their base in 2025, but they will continue to operate out of the South Terminal after their base operation ends. Their transition to the Barbara Jordan Terminal will happen sometime before the South Terminal closure, which is anticipated to occur in 2026.”
The airline’s route reductions will impact flights to several destinations including Bozeman, MT (BZM), Cincinnati (CVG), Des Moines (DSM), Eugene (EUG), Grand Rapids (GRR), Knoxville, TN (TYS), Louisville (SDF), Santa Ana (SNA), Sarasota (SRQ), and Washington-Dulles (IAD).
Future Prospects and Renovation Impact
Despite these changes, there is potential for Allegiant to reestablish its crew base once the ongoing renovations are completed. The new Concourse B at Austin Airport, slated to be finished by 2030, will feature 10 additional gates and a direct connection to the main Barbara Jordan Terminal.
Austin’s airport has seen significant shifts in airline operations recently. Earlier this year, American Airlines ended nearly two dozen routes from the metropolitan area, and Virgin Atlantic suspended its service to London Heathrow Airport. In response, Delta Air Lines has increased frequencies on several domestic flights, positioning Austin as a key access point for connections.
