Introduction to Fossil Hunting in the U.K.

For enthusiasts of paleontology and nature alike, the United Kingdom offers a treasure trove of fossil hunting opportunities. Following a study conducted by South Western Railway, which evaluated 23 coastal locations for their fossil game, Walton-on-the-Naze in Essex has emerged as the premier destination for fossil seekers across the nation.

Walton-on-the-Naze: A Fossil Paradise

Walton-on-the-Naze not only enjoys the reputation of being a delightful seaside destination but also boasts an impressive fossil find frequency of 5 out of 5. This charming town is specifically recognized for the Red Crag formation, which is rich with fossils from the Paleogene period, dating back approximately 65.5 to 23 million years. Here, visitors frequently uncover remarkable relics like shark teeth, fossilized wood, and even the occasional megalodon shark tooth, which was recently discovered in 2023.

Other Notable Fossil Locations

While Walton-on-the-Naze claims the title as the best fossil hunting location, other sites like Folkestone in Kent and Bracklesham Bay in West Sussex are also worth exploring. In Folkestone, fossil hunters stand a good chance of finding pterosaur bone fragments during low tide. Bracklesham Bay, famed for its Paleogene fossils over 65 million years old, offers a glimpse into the rich history of marine life. If your journey takes you to Seaford Head or Warden Point, you’ll encounter unique specimens such as echinoids, belemnites, and bivalves.
