London City Airport (LCY) is poised for a significant expansion that promises to enhance travel convenience across Europe. Situated just east of central London, the airport has received approval from the Department for Transport to increase its passenger capacity from 6.5 million to 9 million annually. This development is a crucial step for the airport, which features a modest 15 gates divided across two wings.

Enhanced Accessibility and Increased Flights

The approval also includes an allowance for three additional early morning weekday flights, making it easier for travelers to reach various European destinations. Last year, the airport accommodated 3.4 million passengers—a stark contrast to the 79 million who passed through London’s Heathrow Airport (LHR). Known for its close proximity to central London, LCY has seen a steady increase in passengers since the pandemic, although it is yet to reach the pre-pandemic figures of 5.1 million travelers in 2019.

Current Operating Hours and Future Prospects

Despite the expansion approval, the airport will maintain its current operating hours. London City Airport is open from 4:45 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10:45 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sundays, and from 4:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays. The airport’s request to extend Saturday hours until 6:30 p.m. was denied due to concerns including noise pollution. LCY’s CEO, Alison Fitzgerald, stated that this decision might hinder the introduction of cleaner, quieter aircraft.
