Introduction to Goblin Valley State Park

Goblin Valley State Park is one of Utah’s hidden gems, nestled conveniently within the prestigious loop of Utah’s ‘Mighty Five’ national parks, which includes Zion, Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, Arches, and Canyonlands. This unique park is renowned for its otherworldly rock formations that evoke a feeling of being on another planet. As Drew Sprafke, the park manager, describes, Goblin Valley occupies a central position among these revered natural wonders, making it a destination worth visiting in its own right.

Getting to Goblin Valley State Park

Reaching Goblin Valley requires some planning, as it is located about four hours from Salt Lake City International Airport and approximately 2.5 hours from the Grand Junction Regional Airport in Colorado. There is no public transportation available, so having access to a vehicle—whether it’s your own or a rental—is necessary. Most visitors experience Goblin Valley as part of their journey to the other national parks, making the park a delightful stop between Arches and Capitol Reef.

Planning Your Visit: What You Need to Know

Before embarking on your adventure, it’s crucial to be prepared, as Goblin Valley has limited amenities. The nearest town, Hanksville, is 30 miles away and offers minimal services. Make sure to carry sufficient fuel, water, and a physical map since cell service is sparse in the area. With a modest entry fee of $20 for a private vehicle, visitors can explore the park at their leisure. While some may only have a couple of hours to spend here, it’s highly recommended to dedicate at least an afternoon to fully appreciate this remarkable park and its surroundings.
