Introduction
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has announced a remarkable achievement: over twenty million travelers have now signed up for the TSA PreCheck program. This milestone, reached on Thursday, marks the highest number ever recorded since the program’s inception in 2013.
Why TSA PreCheck is Popular
According to TSA Administrator David Pekoske, more travelers are opting for TSA PreCheck due to its value, ease, and time-saving benefits. Designed as an innovative risk-based security solution, TSA PreCheck offers several advantages including shorter wait times under 10 minutes, enhanced checkpoint efficiency, and maintained security standards.
Enrollment Process
Travelers interested in TSA PreCheck can apply online and schedule an in-person interview to complete the enrollment process. Approved travelers benefit from the ability to leave shoes, belts, and light jackets on, and not having to remove laptops and liquids from their bags when passing through security. The enrollment is valid for five years.
Comprehensive Trusted Traveler Programs
In total, the TSA reports over 40 million travelers have joined various Department of Homeland Security (DHS) trusted traveler programs including Global Entry and TSA PreCheck. The TSA also allows children under 12 to accompany enrolled parents or guardians in PreCheck lanes, and teenagers aged 13 to 17 to do the same under specific reservations if they have the TSA PreCheck mark on their boarding passes.
Expanding Reach
The TSA continues to expand the TSA PreCheck program by adding more airlines, currently counting over 100 domestic and international carriers. Several private companies, such as biometric firm CLEAR, act as enrollment centers to facilitate the process. The consistent growth of TSA PreCheck underscores its popularity and efficacy in expediting the security process for travelers.
